BREAKING NEWS…

She woke on Christmas morning, alone, as she always does. She doesn’t mind the quiet solitude of her life.
Today she can hear the muffled sounds of Christmas music coming from the neighbours apartment. Grr.  She turns on the TV to cover the noise. She watches CNN to catch up on the breaking news.
She can’t take the risk of opening her door to get her newspaper. Sure enough a neighbour will be out there. They’ll wish her a Merry Christmas and expect her to return the greeting.
She anticipates the phone calls she’ll receive from her nosy family members. They’ll want to know her plans for the day. Sure enough, the phone rings. She doesn’t answer. It’s her brother calling, he leaves a message to ask if she would like to have dinner with his family. Hah. Another last minute invitation. He’s been doing this for the past two weeks. More phone calls she ignores. Some leave messages wishing her a Merry Christmas, hoping she is having a good day. Some don’t leave messages at all - so rude.
CNN reports breaking news on the war in Ukraine. A knock at the door. Hmm. Who would that be? She tiptoes over to look through the peephole. It’s her crazy neighbour from across the hall. He’s got a package in his hand. What could that be about? He stands there for a few minutes with a silly smile on his face. Eventually he decides to leave but places the package on top of her newspaper. She watches him walk down the hall to her next door neighbour - the one playing the annoying Christmas music. He knocks on the door, the neighbour opens it and invites him in. That could end badly.
Her curiosity gets the best of her and she takes the chance. She unlocks her door and quickly reaches out to grab the newspaper and the package. Seconds later she’s safely locked in her apartment again. The package is wrapped in brown paper. There’s a note attached, “Merry Christmas. Hope you enjoy these home-made cookies.” Cookies from a stranger? She has no idea what might be in them. Fentanyl? Maybe! Straight into the trash.
