Oh, Christmas Tree
December 2 2024
The fir tree spent its first night thawing out inside the house. By morning the branches dipped enough to allow for the lights and then the rest of the decorations to be placed in their specific locations. They slathered the tree in tinsel which reflected the lights so they stood out more in the dark.
The family stood back and enjoyed their work. It was a masterpiece they decided. The best tree yet.
And it was, until someone noticed a small face peering out of the tiny church door. The squealing, jumping and finger pointing identified the field mouse they brought home with the tree.
The father was quick to try to dislodge it from the tree when it disappeared. Their cat was looming around the edges of the room before he went into action. He took a flying leap at the tree. It teetered perilously before it toppled, tangling both the cat and the father in garland. As the father untangled himself the mother said,
“Another fine mess, my dear,” she chuckled as she worked to help him right the tree.
And the mouse? He hid under the fridge for a long time, eating the Christmas crumbs that had gathered there.
