T’was The NIght Before Christmas

William Holbrook Beard, Santa Claus, c. 1862
“There is no such thing as Santa Claus,” murmured the teenage couple as they each removed a piece of clothing in the faint light in the backseat of the 1956 Chevrolet Belair. The Christmas game they had developed as a way to slow them down during the holiday season seemed to be reaching its natural and fruitful conclusion. As she leaned back against the seat for a final time Mona spotted a small movement in the sky above them through the steamy window. She reached up and quickly wiped the window only to spot a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer. She looked away and then looked back before nudging Todd and pointing. As he looked, he let out a groan of disbelief. By mutual agreement they reluctantly decided to follow the rules of the game and wait another twelve months before picking up where they left off.
As Todd gathered his clothes he heard Mona, in a moment of hubris say, “forget that. I’m not waiting another year.” He grinned and dropped his clothes.
