A Writing Challenge: Two One Hundred Word Stories

On Substack, one of the writers asked if people would like to co-author a story. She would write 50 words and then the co-author would write 50 words, either before or after her portion of the story. It seemed like an intriguing challenge so I volunteered.

What you are reading here are two of the efforts I submitted to her. There are many more. Her efforts are those repeated in each story. The titles are mine so they may be changed when she publishes them on Substack.

Relief

The bomb runs had ended for the night as she picked her way through the rubble, avoiding the craters that infected the street. As she turned the corner she sighed with relief that her cottage had been spared. She opened the door and hurried to the radio, turning it on.

The radio crackled to life on the station she listened to every single night. She curled up in her comfy armchair with her hot drink and plate of cookies, ready for the nightly program to begin.

Her heart pounded when she heard the familiar tune and her favorite host speak.

A Suitable Ending

The radio crackled to life on the station she listened to every single night. She curled up in her comfy armchair with her hot drink and plate of cookies, ready for the nightly program to begin.

Her heart pounded when she heard the familiar tune and her favorite host speak.

Once the music ended her head nodded, then dropped to her chest. As her husband reached over and turned off the radio, he reflected that her compulsion for this fool had quickly reached a natural and satisfying end. He then fed the rest of the cooling milk to her cat.
