The Christmas Lights

“Oooh, I can’t wait,” said 10 year old Kendall with eager anticipation. “Every time we get off the highway and start the last bit of the trip to Grandma’s house I wonder if it is still there.”

Her brother, 9 year old Davey piped up. “Every year they have added a new piece to the picture.”

“It’s been that way for the last 20 years,” explained their mother Sarah. “Even as a young girl there was something new.”

“I remember the first time I saw it,” replied their father. “I was driving to your Grandparents house. “It was so wonderful I had to pull over to the side of the road to take a look at it. It was the highlight of the drive,” he looked over at his wife, “well after seeing your mother that is.”

“Nice catch dad,” said Kendall. She was becoming mature beyond her years.

As they rounded the last curve Jim said, ”there it is.”

Ooohs and ahhs and other words of excitement escaped from their lips. Jim slowed and pulled over to take in the full spectacle. “The Santa that is flying is a nice touch,” said Sarah.

“Let’s go! Hurry dad!” exclaimed Davey. “He needs to know we are staying at grandma’s tonight.”

“I think he might have an inkling,” replied Jim as he turned up the radio to sing along with the tune, Up On The Housetop. Everyone joined in for the last stretch of the drive. The colourful lights that dotted the countryside made the rest of the drive more festive.
