The bright light continued to fill the observable sky. Wendall looked up in wonder from his spot under the tree. “I wonder what this is all about?” he asked, feeling the warmth and joy of the moment as his flock ate quietly

“This is an immensely beautiful vision,” he murmured.

Wendall’s last thought before his eyes closed for the night was, “who knows what the future brings but it will never equal this moment, when a star shone brighter and longer than any star before it.”

His mind shut down unaware of the real importance of what he had witnessed.

“I live for summer parties,” reflected Dan, “but when it hits December again, I dread it.”

“Why is that?” asked Mary as she fingered her wine glass with interest.

Dan slowly turned his head in her direction. “In the summer the parties are outdoors. Lots of open spaces, warm fires, good conversations.”

“That sounds wonderful,” replied Mary.

“But in December,” said Dan with a shudder. “Crowded rooms, no air movement. Sweat from overheating.”

“I feel it too,” said Mary as she downed the rest of her drink. “I can think of a better place to be. Care to join me?”

“Is that it?”

“I think so.”

Sam looked at the gifts. “It’s not much.”

“It’s all we got,” said Kath.

“The day is more than gifts. Warmth, love, we are one, just us.”

“Thoughts to see as we get old.”

“I thought so,” Sam smiled. “We will be fine. Play cards. Eat food. Watch films. We will be one.”

“That’s all we need.” Kath thought out loud. “Do you know what I miss?”

Sam saw the tear as she put a cloth on it. “The kids?”

With a nod, she looked to the door.

“I’ll get my coat,” said Sam.
