One Person’s Tradition Is Another Person’s Mess

“Not many travellers tonight,” reflected Lily as they drove along the quiet highway just outside a small town.

“It’s Christmas Eve,” commented Marshall. “Just a few stragglers making the trip to their Christmas destination.” He observed some Christmas lights coming up along the highway. “Look at this place,” he said as they passed it in what appeared to be slow motion.

“That,” observed Lily, “is a veritable Christmas junkyard.”

“Be nice Lily. Tell us how you really feel.” Marshall smiled with a hint of mirth.

“Honestly, I am sure they have put it up because they think it is the most amazingly decorated house ever,” she reflected, “but really it is like they took every bad outdoor Christmas decoration possible and just threw it on their lawn and house.”

“It is a little overdone,” admitted Marshall. “It reminds me of home though,” he said wistfully. “My parents' neighbour has a house decorated just like this. They even found some lights that are not traditional Christmas colours and added them in for good measure. Is it overdone? Sure, but it just continues to fuel the imagination.”

“It is overdone,” Lily said. “I will agree to that.”

Marshall said quietly. “Maybe next year we can go home for Christmas. I would like that.”

“Then let's make it happen,” replied Lily as she took his hand.
