May Theme - Poetry, Week 2
Sawmill Road
Don’t make the mistake poor Charlie made,
When he took that left-hand turn.
Maybe he missed the warning sign.
The truth we’ll never learn.
The post is kind of crooked,
The red paint, badly cracked,
So Charlie turned at Sawmill Road,
Though the sign says, “No Way Back”.
From the window in the diner,
The knowing locals stared,
The knowing locals stared,
As he headed down the Sawmill Road,
And his taillights disappeared.
They prayed the headlights would return,
But as the thick fog soon rolled in,
Poor Charlie, a victim of Sawmill Road,
Was never seen again.
In the light of day officials searched,
The twists and turns and bends.
They found his truck and work boots,
Where the road abruptly ends.
So heed this warning, travellers,
Or your fate will be foretold,
Just past the diner, obey the sign—
Do not enter Sawmill Road.
Nicely done. Loved the rhythm of it. Sort of Robert Frost-like.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I keep falling back to this pattern of abcb. I'm going to work this month on breaking away from it.
ReplyDeleteReally curious about this…is there a true story behind it like there is with most of your writing? You do have a gift!
ReplyDeleteThanks Nancy. Purely fiction.
ReplyDeleteYou mentioned that you fall back on to your favourite rhyme scheme. That's something I do to!
